Hello September!

First things first; above is the only print I carved in all of August, and I have to say that even though it was more of a challenge for myself than it was meant to be useful, it just didn't make me happy. When I clicked over to Modish biz tips today and saw that I'm not the only one seemingly in a creative funk, I decided to join in with the monthly goal meetup.

September goals:
1. Unslumpify yo'self, girl. (This one is Jena's but completely captures my mood.)
2. Read a book that has nothing to do with design.
3. Set aside one working day each week to be creative...no blogs, magazines, hunting for inspiration; only drawing, printing, carving, sewing allowed.
4. Introduce new website design and contact 3 brick and mortar stores each week regarding wholesaling.

That should do it. I think number 3 will be most valuable. I've been spending much too much time looking for inspiration, but not doing anything with it. Wish me luck!

Link:lore (Nea)

Hello there. I hope you all had a lovely weekend. Today I get to share a very lovely shop with you, Nea. Janick, the designer behind Nea, creates beautiful wall wear (a phrase she also created) and things you can wear too. I'm so happy to share her work with you and to find out more about her inspirations. Enjoy!

1. Why did you decide to open an online shop?
At first, I just wanted to see if something would sell. I have always been on the Web since the Web became accessible to the public, and it's been part of more than half my life! So it was a no brainer to try to sell online, rather than in brick & mortar stores. Plus, it gave me control of my time to make stuff (or not) since I was freelancing full-time as a graphic designer at the time, and I made jewelry in the evening for fun.

2. Who/what inspires you?
Anything and everything! Everything from design books to nature to music to blogs to shopping (anything really) can spark an idea, but the actual materials (textures and colors) are the basis of what I do! I also hold a blog where I find inspiring other wonderful artists and it keeps the inspiration going. Other people's creativity inspires me to go on!

Thanks Janick!

Inspiration...Printed with Red Bridge Studios

When I first started this blog, I wrote a series for a week called Inspiration...Printed in which I shared the inspirations behind some of my prints. I thought it would be fun to bring that series back, only featuring the inspirations and prints of all kinds of printmakers. Each week I'll feature one set of photos showing the inspiration behind a print. I hope to have lots of printmakers join me, so if you are one, or know one, please let me know!

Up first this week is Red Bridge Studio.

Inspiration:
Printed:

"In 2007, I went on holiday to New Zealand. With my lost luggage found, I set off from Christchurch to circumnavigate the South Island by car. I headed south making several stops along the way, including one at the Moeraki Boulders. It was here that I photographed the boulders, seaweed and the halimeda that serves as the inspiration for this print. My surroundings, from urban environments to the outdoors, offer inspiration. I especially love organic shapes" Tyshawn (Red Bridge Studio)

Lovely!

Midweek Inspirations: Inspiration Walls and Tumblr

One of the reasons I started writing Midweek Inspirations posts for my blog was to keep track of the people, places, things, and ideas that are inspiring my work. The only problem is that there is too much. I could write about my inspirations nearly every day, but that would make this an entirely different type of blog. And so, I've taken to starting an inspiration wall in my studio. Mine is too small to show yet, but here are a few that I love...

I've also decided to start a tumblr blog, mostly for myself (and to shorten my list of bookmarks a bit), but you're welcome to follow along whenever you need some inspiration. And just for fun, you can find a few more tumblr blogs that I like here, here, and here. Have a lovely day!

Link:lore (Byrd & Belle)

Link:lore is the story behind the links...

I first saw the work of Angie, otherwise known as byrd & belle, on the front page of Etsy a few weeks ago and I was immediately drawn to her use of natural materials, beautiful detailing, and simple design. I also love that her shop is full of practical accessories, lovely things that make every day living more beautiful. Enjoy!

1. Why did you decide to open an online shop?
I think for designers that have a fairly specific point of view, selling online is the best opportunity to reach people that share their design sensibilities. Had I started by only selling in local shops, I think I may have felt pressured to design based on the inventory of the shop, the customer demographic and what was or wasn't selling. I've found that when I've tried to cater to a trend or with the goal of sales in mine, my work is far less successful and fun to do.

2. Who/what inspires you?
My background is in architecture and it definitely affects the way I think through objects; focusing on the construction and details. I grew up on a farm in Iowa surrounded by traditional craft but in my adult life, I tend to tilt toward a modern aesthetic. This duality seems to come together in my work as I favor traditional materials and techniques but tend to pare down my patters and designs to a simple, modern object.

Thanks Angie!

Pattern Thinking

I'm thinking about patterns this morning. Here are a couple I saw this week that caught my eye:

this one is from the magazine Jamie (can't find the link where I saw this)

and this is from the flickr stream of Steffen Tuck. I just love the shadows here. Hope you have a lovely weekend planned. See you on Monday!
